Sines gives Solano Link its European landing point on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, chosen for a favorable deep-water approach and growing regional importance as a subsea cable and data infrastructure hub — several other Atlantic and African systems have landed or announced landings in the same general area over the past several years, building a genuine interconnection ecosystem where previously most Iberian traffic backhauled through Lisbon or Madrid alone.
The station carries 700 racks of colocation space across 10 MW of critical power, sized for Solano Link’s terminal equipment plus regional carrier and hyperscale customer colocation. Onward terrestrial backhaul runs to Lisbon, roughly 150 km northeast, connecting into the broader Iberian and European fiber backbone.
Sines is also the site of a small-scale pilot data center module built directly into the landing station campus rather than backhauled inland — an experiment in placing modest compute capacity as physically close to the cable head as possible for customers with genuinely latency-sensitive workloads terminating South Atlantic traffic, and one we’re evaluating for wider rollout at future landing sites depending on results.
