Boreal Span exists for one reason: physical diversity. Every customer running latency-sensitive or business-critical traffic across the North Atlantic on Meridian-1 eventually asks the same question — what’s the backup path, and does it actually avoid sharing a landing corridor, a route, or a maintenance zone with the primary one? Before Boreal Span, our honest answer was that true physical diversity meant buying capacity from a different operator entirely. Boreal Span changes that.

The route runs from Halifax, Canada, north to a landing point near Reykjavik, Iceland, and on to Galway, Ireland — a northern corridor that shares no continental-shelf crossing, no landing station, and no maintenance-zone overlap with Meridian-1’s more southerly New Jersey–Cornwall path. The Iceland landing point also gives Icelandic and Faroese carriers a second international connectivity option, a secondary commercial benefit of a route chosen primarily for diversity engineering.

At 5,100 km, Boreal Span is shorter than Meridian-1 despite its more northerly path, and carries 8 fiber pairs for 192 Tbps combined design capacity — intentionally sized as a diversity and growth-capacity system rather than a primary-traffic trunk. Route survey work in the North Atlantic’s colder, rougher operating conditions ran through an extended weather-window season, and cable lay is sequenced around the region’s harsher winter sea states.

Boreal Span is wholly owned by Current and is currently under construction, with the Halifax–Reykjavik segment laid and the Reykjavik–Galway segment scheduled for the next favorable lay window.
