Redundancy Isn't Optional: Designing for Physical Route Diversity

“Redundant” is one of the most misused words in capacity sales. A second cable system that lands at the same station, uses the same terrestrial backhaul provider, or crosses the same shallow-water corridor as the primary system isn’t redundant in any way that matters during an actual outage — it shares nearly every failure mode with the system it’s supposed to be backing up.

Real physical diversity requires independence across several layers simultaneously: a different marine route corridor (so a single anchor strike, fishing incident, or seismic event can’t affect both), a different landing station (so a single facility fire, power failure, or physical security incident can’t affect both), and ideally a different terrestrial backhaul path from the landing station inland (so a single construction accident severing a terrestrial duct doesn’t take out both routes’ onward connectivity even if the marine cables themselves are both fine).

Boreal Span exists specifically to give North Atlantic customers a diversity option that satisfies all three layers against Meridian-1 — different landing stations on both continents, a marine route far enough north that it shares no continental-shelf corridor with Meridian-1’s path, and independent terrestrial backhaul on both ends. A customer buying capacity on both systems genuinely loses the ability to lose both simultaneously to any single credible event.

When we scope a diversity requirement with a customer, the first question we ask isn’t “how much capacity” — it’s “diverse from what, and at which of those three layers does your existing primary route actually share infrastructure.” Most customers, when they map it out with us, discover their existing “backup” shares at least one layer with their primary path.
